During a session at the 2022 AAO Annual Meeting, Christopher Rapuano, MD, and Sonia Yoo, MD, debated the best way to surgically manage recurrent corneal erosions. The audience was polled ahead of the presentations, with 65% indicating that they thought epithelial debridement with diamond burr polishing of Bowman’s layer is better; 25% said that PTK is better.
Research out of Wayne State University turned to “drug repurposing” to identify already-approved therapies that could be used to treat antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections in the eye. The investigation ultimately identified three non-antibiotic drug candidates that had anti-inflammatory effects against antibiotic-sensitive and antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains in cultured human retina cells.
Back in June, ophthalmology had a first—the first grand rounds in the field to take place in the metaverse, according to Eric Rosenberg, DO. According to the tech magazine Wired, the term metaverse refers to “how we interact with technology,” and at present, most of the time that technology is virtual reality and/or augmented reality.
While some studies have found that femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery does not offer a significant benefit over traditional phaco, many surgeons still find it helpful in the setting of certain comorbidities. For Robert Noecker, MD, one of these is glaucoma.
The Moran Eye Center residents reviewed “Effect of time since primary laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis on flap relift success and epithelial ingrowth risk” from the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.

The Light Adjustable Lens is still a relatively new technology, offering the ability to adjust the refractive settings of the lens after implantation with “lock-in” treatments. Several ophthalmologists discussed their decision to bring it into practice, implementation considerations, and overall impressions.
