With increased experience, physicians are discovering ways to use the IC-8 Apthera IOL (Bausch + Lomb) off label. Two of these physicians discussed their experience using the lens, including ways that it can apply to patients who previously had limited options, particularly those with irregular astigmatism.

In this op-ed, Vance Thompson, MD, Chair of the ASCRS Business of Refractive Cataract Surgery Summit (BRiCS), discussed the opportunities that practices have with advanced-technology IOLs and how BRiCS will give practice teams the confidence they need to increase growth in these IOLs.
This is an example of midperipheral transillumination defects from a multifocal IOL causing UGH syndrome. The patient underwent IOL exchange with resolution of inflammation.

Two cornea and refractive specialists discussed the most common reasons an IOL exchange may be needed and the initial diagnostic steps to rule out other reasons for poor quality vision. They shared pearls for performing these cases and the importance of having a comprehensive plan of attack.

While there a lot of different technologies that can give patients excellent refractive results after cataract surgery, this area keeps expanding and improving. As more options become available, it increases the complexity of talking to patients. This is what the symposium Having “The Talk” focused on at the 2024 ASCRS Annual Meeting.
