Dead bag syndrome, first described by Samuel Masket, MD, is the subject of a recent paper published in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (JCRS). The study’s corresponding author, Liliana Werner, MD, PhD, described the paper as the first formal peer-reviewed study on dead bag syndrome. It examined the clinical and histopathological findings of 10 suspected cases.

While cataract surgery continually experiences advancement in technologies, techniques, implants, and calculations, one area that seems seldom discussed in comparison is incisions. A study that was published in late 2021 in JAMA Ophthalmology, however, took a look at the effect of incision shape on a cataract surgery complication in the setting of dense cataracts.
Despite the strides that females have made in increasing representation in various areas of medicine, female representation in ophthalmology is still lagging behind the proportion of women in the U.S population and in medical school, according to research published in JAMA Ophthalmology. This wasn’t what the authors of the study expected to find, Divya Srikumaran, MD, coauthor of the study, told EyeWorld.
Scott Gottlieb, MD, former FDA commissioner, spoke at the 2021 ASCRS Annual Meeting in July 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada, giving an overview of the state of the COVID-19 pandemic at the time, providing insight on how the nation got to where it was at that time, and sharing his thoughts on how the country could reduce its risk in the future.
Emanuel Rosen, MD, FRCSEd, passed away on November 20. Dr. Rosen was one of the founding editors of the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery. He was co-editor from 1996 to 2014, and he received special recognition at the 2014 ASCRS Annual Meeting for his contributions to JCRS. After leaving his role as co-editor, Dr. Rosen took over as case reports editor, leading the introduction of JCRS Case Reports Online.
David Chang, MD, and Kendall Donaldson, MD, MS, chaired the in-person ASCRS 20/Happy in 2021 program in New Orleans, Louisiana, an expansion of the ASCRS Master Class in Refractive Cataract Surgery. The CME program included presentations on a variety of refractive topics.
While the Dresden protocol of epithelium removal, riboflavin loading, and UV light treatment remains the gold standard for crosslinking to stop progression of keratoconus, over the years there has been significant research on new techniques and adjuncts to enhance the effect, make the procedure less invasive, and/or expand its indications. One of these potential therapies for keratoconus still under investigation uses violet light-emitting glasses (KeraVio, Tsubota Laboratory).
