This year’s Operation Sight Volunteer of the Year is Andrew Kao, MD. Dr. Kao was recognized during the 2024 ASCRS Annual Meeting. Dr. Kao is also part of a nonprofit in Bakersfield, California, called the Advanced Center for Eyecare, whose mission is to serve the underserved and underinsured.
The ASCRS Foundation will host “Be the Change You Wish to See,” at the 2024 ASCRS Annual Meeting. The discussion will include lessons learned, current needs, and future opportunities for addressing blindness domestically and worldwide. The symposium will feature four sections, all moderated by ASCRS Foundation Board members.
For many years, Martin Spencer, MD, has worked closely with Seva Foundation and Seva Canada in Nepal and many other countries around the world. As a board member of both organizations, he prioritizes service quality, volume, and program sustainability.
The ASCRS Foundation thanked its partners and supporters for the accomplishments from the past year.
The ASCRS Foundation has provided nearly 10,000 surgeries to underserved individuals in the U.S. through Operation Sight. There are 750 volunteers dedicated to making cataract care accessible. Since 2015, Operation Sight has celebrated National Sight Week as a call to all members of the ophthalmic community to join in restoring sight.
The ASCRS Foundation’s mission is to provide humanitarian cataract surgery and support physician education in the U.S. and in developing countries. David Chang, MD, has served as chair or co-chair of the ASCRS Foundation Board of Directors for nearly a decade, and this spring he will pass the torch to Susan MacDonald, MD.
The ASCRS Foundation announced that Helena Ndume, MD, is the recipient of the 2023 ASCRS Foundation Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award. The Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award is endowed by a generous gift from David and Victoria Chang to celebrate and honor outstanding humanitarian work with an emphasis on cataract blindness and disability.
The ASCRS Foundation is excited to reunite with its supporters at the ASCRS Annual Meeting. Every donor, volunteer, and champion is vital to the domestic and international work in treating preventable cataract blindness and changing lives.
