Debating the best way to manage recurrent corneal erosions

During a session at the 2022 AAO Annual Meeting, Christopher Rapuano, MD, and Sonia Yoo, MD, debated the best way to surgically manage recurrent corneal erosions. The audience was polled ahead of the presentations, with 65% indicating that they thought epithelial debridement with diamond burr polishing of Bowman’s layer is better; 25% said that PTK is better.

‘Drug repurposing’ research identifies non-antibiotic therapies to potentially treat endophthalmitis

Research out of Wayne State University turned to “drug repurposing” to identify already-approved therapies that could be used to treat antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections in the eye. The investigation ultimately identified three non-antibiotic drug candidates that had anti-inflammatory effects against antibiotic-sensitive and antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains in cultured human retina cells.

Grand rounds have entered the metaverse

Back in June, ophthalmology had a first—the first grand rounds in the field to take place in the metaverse, according to Eric Rosenberg, DO. According to the tech magazine Wired, the term metaverse refers to “how we interact with technology,” and at present, most of the time that technology is virtual reality and/or augmented reality.
