Before we delve into ophthalmology, I want to say that I hope everyone had a wonderful summer, and I hope you all had a chance to take some time to travel or refuel after the last few years we have been experiencing.

This issue of EyeWorld has many interesting articles on pertinent cataract surgery topics. We look at how best to address astigmatism prior to surgery and how best to assess the macula prior to surgery, including the basics of OCT interpretation. We focus on understanding fluidics during phaco surgery and perhaps incorporating the LAL IOL into your practice.

Sometimes it is good to get a refresher on basic issues that we consider intuitive. The overarching theme of “Back to basics” is important to ensure we always stay up to date even on the “simple” things and give our patients the best possible outcomes.
