First U.S. patient randomized in pivotal study for intermediate to advanced dry AMD
i-Lumen Scientific announced the first U.S. patient has been randomized in the i-SIGHT2 pivotal study evaluating the i-Lumen AMD System in patients with intermediate to advanced dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). According to the company’s press release, the i-SIGHT2 is a randomized, sham-controlled study designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the i-Lumen AMD System, an investigational device that delivers a noninvasive, office-based bioelectric therapy intended to improve retinal electrophysiology and visual function in patients with vision loss due to intermediate to advanced dry AMD. “The therapy delivers low-level microcurrent stimulation through the eyelid to boost the transepithelial potential, repolarizing the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells to improve photoreceptor cell function.”

Research highlights
- A prospective multicenter randomized controlled trial at three eye centers in China sought to compare the postoperative rotational stability of three toric IOL platforms and identify platform-specific biometric factors associated with rotation. The study, published in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, included 256 eyes of 172 cataract patients with regular corneal astigmatism that completed 3 months of follow-up after phacoemulsification with implantation of a TECNIS Toric II (Johnson & Johnson Vision), Clareon Toric (Alcon), or AT TORBI 709M (Zeiss). Participants in the trial were randomly assigned to 1 of the 3 toric IOL platforms. Results from the trial found that absolute rotation changed most prominently within the first week and then progressively stabilized. The authors concluded that “hydrophobic C-loop toric IOLs showed better early rotational stability than the hydrophilic plate-haptic toric IOL. Biometric correlates of rotation differed across platforms, supporting individualized toric IOL selection and postoperative monitoring.”
- Research published in Ophthalmology evaluated the access to diabetic retinopathy (DR) care by quantifying the geographic distribution of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures for DR across the U.S. This was a retrospective cohort study using the IRIS (Intelligent Research in Sight) Registry. Authors identified patients with ≥ 2 International Classification of Disease (ICD) codes for DR between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2024. The study identified 11,254,015 therapeutic and 35,892,574 diagnostic procedures from 1,142,505 patients with DR. Study authors concluded that “DR-related diagnostic and therapeutic services were concentrated predominantly in urban practice locations, even after adjustment for population differences and disease burden, and support the need for strategies to improve access in non-urban communities.”
