Kelman Lecture highlights innovation and thinking differently
This year, the Charles D. Kelman, MD, Innovator’s Lecture was given by Damien Gatinel, MD, PhD.
Manjool Shah, MD, introduced Dr. Gatinel, who he said is known for his rigorous mathematical approach to solving problems in the field. Dr. Gatinel has pioneered new classification of optical aberrations and holds patents for diffractive trifocal IOL optics. Additionally, Dr. Gatinel has received numerous international awards and has published more than 220 peer-reviewed articles.
Dr. Gatinel’s lecture was titled “At Right Angles to Convention: Orthogonality and the Art of Breakthroughs.”
Delusion and how it relates to innovation
Prior to the Charles D. Kelman, MD, Innovator’s Lecture, which was delivered during the Saturday on the Main Stage session, April 26, Reay Brown, MD, a dedicated innovator and glaucoma specialist, spoke about the philosophy of innovation and how it requires a little bit of delusion.
Cornea videos showcased in ASCRS Main Stage session
The first ASCRS Main Stage session on Saturday, April 26 was the Get H.I.P. – Cornea session. The Get H.I.P. sessions feature “high impact pearls,” discussed through short, video-based presentations.
Cornea videos were shared in several categories, with discussion following each case. Categories included surgical techniques and tips, surgical or postop complications (and how to manage them), and novel surgical approaches/devices.

ASOA president lays out inspiration and vision for future
The ASOA Opening General Session included an overview of the strategic vision for the organization, an inspirational message from the 2025–26 President Carrie Jacobs, COE, OCS, and a motivational keynote presentation.
How to create a destination workplace
Joe Mull returned to the ASOA Annual Meeting for a third time on Saturday, April 26, as part of the Opening General Session, speaking this time about “Employalty™.”
What most people in the workforce are doing right now, Mr. Mull said, is identifying what they want to do for most of their waking hours, what brings them the most joy, what can allow them to support the things they care about most (which often are not job-related).
Party for a Purpose
The ASCRS ASOA Party for a Purpose took place Friday night, April 25, and Hollywood glitz and glam were on full display. Donations from the event benefitted the ASCRS Foundation. As of Saturday morning, the ASCRS Foundation had raised more than $180,000.
The ASCRS Foundation would like to thank iOR Partners for their generous $35,000 match donation.
Thank you to all attendees who took the time to attend the event and donate to a great cause. The ASCRS Foundation would also like to thank the teams who participated in this year’s event and showcased their chosen movies with amazing costumes, music, dancing, and more.
