The ASCRS Foundation announced Geoff Tabin, MD, and Sanduk Ruit, MD, as the 2021 Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award winners. Endowed by a generous gift from David and Victoria Chang, the ASCRS Foundation Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award recognizes outstanding humanitarian work with a focus on cataract blindness and disability.

Review of “Quantifying the educational benefit of additional cataract surgery cases in ophthalmology residency”

Achieving competency in cataract surgery is an essential component of ophthalmology residency training. This ASCRS/EyeWorld Journal Club took a look at a paper by Liebman et al. that evaluates quantification of the resident cataract surgery learning curve and identification of the case threshold at which residents experience marginal educational benefit.

Review of “Patient management modifications in cataract surgery candidates following incorporation of routine preoperative macular OCT”

OCT is a quick and non-invasive imaging modality with a high sensitivity in diagnosing macular conditions. The ASCRS/EyeWorld Journal Club reviewed a paper by Leung et al. that analyzed a cases series to evaluate the utility of macular OCT in cataract surgery preop assessments.

Review of “Diffuse lamellar keratitis after LASIK with low-energy femtosecond laser”

The ASCRS/EyeWorld Journal Club reviewed this large, retrospective, non-comparative case series by Leccisotti and Fields that evaluated the incidence, clinical course, and prognosis of DLK in patients undergoing low-energy femtosecond LASIK in combination with sterile techniques to limit interface contamination.

ASCRS prepares for 2021 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas

ASCRS announced that the 2021 Annual Meeting will be held July 23–27 in Las Vegas, Nevada, moving from the previous location of San Francisco, California. The move to Las Vegas allows ASCRS to have its first meeting in 800+ days in as safe a meeting venue as can be reasonably organized.

Update on COVID-19 vaccines

In December 2020, the FDA authorized two COVID-19 vaccines for emergency use: the first developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and the second by Moderna. Both are mRNA vaccines, and both require two doses spaced several weeks apart. As of February 22, more than 75.2 million doses had been delivered, more than 64.1 million of which had been administered.

ASCRS Grand Rounds recap

ASCRS began its Grand Rounds in October 2020 as a monthly CME opportunity for members. The Grand Rounds are hosted in partnership with major academic institutions and feature two challenging cases with panel discussions.
