“Ophthalmic surgery can be humbling. From time to time all surgeons experience challenges in surgery that can sometimes result in suboptimal outcomes or morbidity to our patients,” said Sumit “Sam” Garg, MD, Chief Medical Editor. In his introduction to the “Complicated cases” issue, he previewed some of the topics covered.
The theme for this issue, “Complicated Cases,” is a natural offshoot of the recent ASCRS Summer Meeting, according to Mitchell Weikert, MD, Cataract Editor. He gave a preview of the complications covered in the Cataract section of the issue.
“I have always found that I learn the most from listening and talking to my colleagues and those who are experts in their respective fields,” said Chief Medical Editor Sumit “Sam” Garg, MD. He previewed the articles in the issue and shared his favorite best practice from the 2023 ASCRS Annual Meeting.

“Best practices, or our continued efforts to improve the safety, quality, and consistency of eyecare, improve patients’ quality of vision,” said Karolinne Rocha, MD, PhD. She gave an overview of the articles in the Refractive Surgery section of this issue in her introduction.
“Best practices are the summation of the technical aspects of medicine. They are, in effect, the perfection of the form of medicine,” said Julie Schallhorn, MD. She shared this and other thoughts on best practices and gave a preview of the articles in the Cornea section of the issue.
“The ASCRS Annual Meeting’s glaucoma programming and scientific content … shows me that while we have a long road ahead of us, the creativity, collaboration, and connectedness that exemplify ASCRS will help us light the way,” said Manjool Shah, MD. He shared what to expect in the Glaucoma section of the issue.
