And the Golden Apple Award goes to …

Sunday afternoon’s Challenging and Complicated Cases in Cataract Surgery Video Symposium always culminates with the coveted Golden Apple Award for the best teaching video.

This year, the Cataract Clinical Committee received more than 100 videos and distilled them down to six videos for the symposium. The winner, voted by the audience, was Bruno Trindade, MD, PhD, for his case involving dead bag syndrome.

FDA symposium features comments from FDA commissioner and leaders and more

This year’s FDA symposium featured FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, MD, who made remarks and answered questions about recent FDA decisions and the direction he wants to see the agency move. The session also featured Michelle Tarver, MD, PhD, Center Director, Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH).

The symposium was moderated by Natalie Afshari, MD, and featured panelist William Boyd, MD, Deputy Director of the Division of Ophthalmology in the Office of New Drugs, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER).

Government Relations session highlights current political trends in the U.S.

This year’s invited speaker in the Government Relations symposium was Ron Brownstein. Mr. Brownstein is a Senior Political Analyst for CNN, Bloomberg Opinion Columnist, and former Senior Editor for The Atlantic.

The level of engagement of the public in our politics is at an all-time peak, he said. “Americans are invested in the choices we face.” However, Americans are also deeply polarized in the choices we face. Washington is embroiled in policy debates but also on fundamental questions that we don’t have a lot of muscle memory on debating. At the state level, red and blue states are hurtling in opposite directions on issues, he said.

Upcoming: Monday at the ASCRS Annual Meeting 

Monday is the final day of the ASCRS Annual Meeting! 

There are two symposia Monday morning from 8:00–9:30 a.m. “Mastering Challenging Situations and Complicated Cases: The Office Version” will highlight handling different challenging scenarios in the office and will also feature panel discussion. 

“Perfect Save: Mission Impossible – Challenging Cases Managed by International Experts” is sponsored by the International Intra-Ocular Implant Club (IIIC). The IIIC symposium will focus on global issues of lens-based surgery including management of complications, new technology, and advanced techniques to improve surgical outcomes. The expertise of international leaders in cataract surgery will be highlighted in a case-based program featuring video presentations and will be discussed by a panel of thought leaders in the field of lens-based surgery. 

There will also be a number of ASCRS instructional courses and paper sessions this morning.
