Phaco with the Stars brings ‘rhythm, rivalry, and rhinestones’

Phaco with the Stars was a new session at the ASCRS Annual Meeting based on the concept of the TV show Dancing with the Stars where a professional dancer is paired with an amateur. In this symposium moderated by David Chang, MD, six anterior segment fellows presented complicated cases that were managed with the advice and guidance of their fellowship directors.

In three different categories, two teams competed against each other with the winner voted on by the audience.

‘Get H.I.P. – Cataract’ covers a dozen quick-hit video pearls

More than a dozen videos in the “Get H.I.P. – Cataract” symposium showcased countless pearls. Panelist Nicole Fram, MD, said there were at least three things that she learned from the videos that she’ll take back to the OR and implement next week.

Symposium features discussion on corneal disease in the preop cataract patient

An afternoon session on Sunday, April 27, featured case-based discussion on the management and treatment of various corneal diseases in the preoperative cataract patient. The session was moderated by Brandon Ayres, MD, and Sumitra Khandelwal, MD, and was sponsored by the ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee. 

Amy Lin, MD, shared a case of a preoperative cataract patient with pterygium. She first questioned if you should do a combination case or sequential for these patients but said that she doesn’t do cataract surgery at the same time as pterygium because there are changes with topography and Ks that will happen for several weeks after.

Upcoming: Monday at the ASCRS Annual Meeting 

Monday is the final day of the ASCRS Annual Meeting! The last symposium on Monday morning, titled “Advanced Cataract Surgical Techniques From A(rtificial iris) to Z(onulopathy): Helping You from your 1st To Your 50th,” will cover details that help surgeons embarking on techniques as well as those who are already performing them. Included will be: capsulorhexis with zonulopathy, posterior capsule capsulotomy, iris hooks/rings/segments, capsule tension rings, scleral fixated IOLs, PPV for the anterior segment surgeon, scleral pockets and fixating dislocated IOLs and artificial iris.

There will also be a number of ASCRS Instructional Courses and Paper Sessions this morning. For those interested in ASCRS Skills Transfer Labs, there will be an anterior vitrectomy lab and MSICS lab, as well as free practice rooms open today for basic phaco (8:00–9:00 a.m. in West Hall A, Lab Room A) and basic suturing (8:00– 9:00 a.m. in West Hall A, Lab Room B).
