ASCRS News: Annual Meeting Preview
April 2022

symposia-1

The ASCRS Annual Meeting will feature a variety of symposia covering topics in cataract, refractive, cornea, glaucoma, retina, and more.

Saturday

Kicking off the first official day of the meeting are two symposia from 8:00–9:30 a.m. The retina symposium, sponsored by the ASCRS Retina Clinical Committee, will discuss posterior segment topics as they pertain to anterior segment surgeons. The ASCRS Glaucoma Clinical Committee will sponsor Glaucoma Essentials, which will cover the essentials of glaucoma, from types of glaucoma to clinical evaluation and testing and medical and laser management.

On Saturday afternoon from 1:30–3:00 p.m., the ASCRS Cataract Clinical Committee will sponsor the annual Complicated and Challenging Cases in Cataract Surgery Video Symposium. It will feature a variety of challenging case videos, with the audience choosing which one wins the Golden Apple Award for best teaching case. Also during this time, the ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee will sponsor the Cornea Essentials symposium, which will highlight pertinent cornea topics, such as the non-healing corneal epithelium, infectious keratitis, and inflammatory ocular surface disease. The ASCRS Young Eye Surgeons (YES) Clinical Committee will sponsor Good to Great Surgeon: Working Through Complications Video Symposium. This interactive symposium will showcase difficult cases and complications that come up in the OR. A panel of surgeons will be asked to provide their guidance. Each of the cases will be followed by YES Clinical Committee members’ own complicated case videos, showing how they worked through similar complications.

From 3:30–5:00 p.m., a symposium on IOL Power Calculations will focus on new formulas and technologies. Topics will include long and short eyes, post-RK, post-LVC, keratoconus, and nanophthalmos. Another YES symposium will cover Tools for Survival. The YES Clinical Committee will offer pearls on important practice-related and non-clinical topics that are not always openly discussed.

Sunday

Sunday morning from 8:00–9:30 a.m., the In Between the Edits video symposium, sponsored by the Vanguard Ophthalmology Society, will reveal how to use the most innovative surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes and develop reflex-like responses to the sometimes unexpected surgical dilemmas in surgery. Also during this time will be the Management Pearls on Challenging Corneal Diseases symposium sponsored by ASCRS and the Cornea Society. Faculty will share their experiences and provide evidence-based guidelines in managing challenging cases such as collagen crosslinking in the pediatric population and corneal and ocular surface diseases. Additionally, the Cataract Crossover Symposium will feature presenters discussing cataract surgery in patients with oculoplastic disease, retinal disease, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmic disease, and corneal disease. Presenters will discuss risks and share pearls on how to approach cataract surgery in these eyes.

On Sunday afternoon from 1:30–3:00 p.m., the ASCRS Refractive Surgery Clinical Committee will sponsor Refractive Surgery Rare Circumstances: What, When, and How to Handle Complications. It will explore various refractive surgery techniques and shed light on complications and treatment options. Essential Strategies for Improving Refractive Cataract Surgery Outcomes will cover everything attendees need to know to deliver excellent refractive outcomes in cataract surgery, from explaining what refractive surgery is, to advanced IOL power calculation, to astigmatism management, to cataract removal and premium IOL implantation. The annual ASCRS Government Relations Symposium will also take place during this time.

From 3:30–5:00 p.m., X-Rounds: Refractive Cataract Surgery to the Max will feature the latest and greatest in refractive cataract surgery. Leading surgeons will discuss new advances in cataract surgery, femtosecond laser cataract surgery, refractive IOLs, and case management.

Monday

On Monday from 8:00–9:30 a.m., the ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee and the ASCRS Refractive Clinical Committee will co-sponsor Refractive Surgery in Irregular Corneas. It will aim to increase knowledge of refractive options for irregular corneas. The Perfect Save: Challenging Cases Managed by International Experts will also take place during this time. This symposium will focus on case-based cataract surgery, including management of complications, new technology, IOL calculations, and advanced techniques to improve surgical outcomes.

On Monday from 1:30–3:00 p.m., the ASCRS Cataract Clinical Committee will sponsor Surgical and Pharmacological Approaches to Presbyopia Management. The focus of this symposium will be presbyopia management in 2022. The Essential Cornea In-Office Procedures: Case-Based Management symposium will also take place during this time, focusing on essential corneal procedures that can be done in the office.

Wrapping up the meeting’s symposia on Monday from 3:30–5:00 p.m. will be two sessions. The Bachelor(ette) symposium will be moderated by David Chang, MD, and will feature four patients on a journey to find their perfect IOL for life. Faculty experts pitch their best recommendations, and the audience makes the selection. The Innovations in Anterior Segment Surgery session will feature international faculty discussing what’s new in anterior segment surgery.
