Binkhorst Lecture highlights hydrodissection
This year’s Cornelius D. Binkhorst, MD, Lecture was given by Ronald Yeoh, MD.
“Ron has left an indelible signature on ophthalmology,” said Thomas Samuelson, MD. He has concentrated his teaching and clinical work on cataract surgery, Dr. Samuelson said, adding that he has led many courses.
Dr. Yeoh titled his lecture “Hydro Chronicles,” and said it would detail his 30-year love affair with hydrodissection. It’s not glamorous, but we all do this almost daily in cataract surgery, he said.
Obstbaum Lecture focuses on understanding pathophysiology of glaucoma
“We are on the eve of a fundamental understanding of trabecular meshwork that will allow us to both describe the pathophysiology of glaucoma and intervene at the molecular level,” said Douglas Rhee, MD, when giving the Stephen A. Obstbaum, MD, Honored Lecture.
Dr. Rhee took ASCRS Glaucoma Day attendees on his “Quest to Lower IOP: Medical, Laser, Surgical, and Molecular Approaches.” He said the intent of his talk was to help attendees understand and be more armed to have discussions with patients about what causes glaucoma.
Reay of Hope teaches ‘through each other’s misery’
The Reay of Hope session is a regular feature of ASCRS Glaucoma Day where the goal is “for us all to learn through each other’s misery,” said Nathan Radcliffe, MD, one of the co-moderators of the session.
This year did not disappoint with a case of a bent iDose (Glaukos), a case with no conjunctiva discovered when beginning a bleb-forming procedure, and a case of flat anterior chamber and hypotony that was referred for treatment.
‘Dry Eye Corner’
ASCRS Cornea Day concluded with a session titled, “Dry Eye Corner,” moderated by Michelle Rhee, MD, and Karolinne Rocha, MD, PhD.
Masih Ahmed, MD, discussed lid margin disease health, and Alice Epitropoulos, MD, discussed innovations in diagnostics and in-office procedures.
Pearls from pioneers in refractive surgery
One of the sessions during ASCRS Refractive Day on Friday, April 25, took a look at pearls from some of the pioneers of refractive surgery. One of the moderators, Daniel Chang, MD, said these pioneers were given leeway to share pearls on a refractive topic of their choosing.
Upcoming: Saturday at the ASCRS Annual Meeting
The ASCRS Main Stage on Saturday will feature the Charles D. Kelman, MD, Innovator’s Lecture, this year given by Damien Gatinel, MD, PhD. There will also be several YES events throughout the day in Petree Hall D. The ASCRS Foundation will hold a symposium from 1:30–3:00 p.m. in Petree Hall D, which will focus on “Ophthalmic Care Strategies During Humanitarian Crises: Addressing Challenges and Ensuring Patient and Physician Safety.”
ASCRS Poster winners will be presented today and Sunday. Stop by the 411 Theatre throughout the day to see presentations of winning posters on keratorefractive, glaucoma, cataract, and cornea topics.
