Unquestionably, a key insight in my career was the recognition that glaucoma education as imagined by EyeWorld and ASCRS is a very special thing. For me, this began when I found that ASCRS Glaucoma Day is the most dynamic and exciting glaucoma event each year. A few years later, I was thrilled to give my first presentation at that meeting on adopting the iStent (Glaukos), and I haven’t missed an ASCRS Glaucoma Day since. More than a decade later, now having served as the EyeWorld Glaucoma Editor for the past 5 years, I still think that EyeWorld and ASCRS offer a phenomenal brand of glaucoma education.

Because of its focus on cataract surgery and premium outcomes, EyeWorld’s approach to glaucoma management has aligned well with industry and physician trends to adopt effective yet minimally invasive technology. In this approach, we are balancing our therapies to make sure that we put the patient’s quality of vision and quality of life first. We generally think that understanding, adopting, and perfecting minimally invasive approaches will help the cataract and glaucoma surgeon take the best care of their patients. This is why, over the past 5 years of my time with EyeWorld, and for the foreseeable future, EyeWorld will be highlighting both traditional glaucoma surgical approaches as well as the latest and greatest in diagnostic and surgical innovation. In this issue, we take a look at a number of hot topics, including classification of the expanding MIGS landscape, combining MIGS, and evolutions in MicroPulse Laser Therapy (Iridex).

In concert with the ever-evolving world of glaucoma, it is only natural that my time as the EyeWorld Glaucoma Editor would come to an end, in order to allow a new perspective to further all of our educations. I couldn’t be more thrilled with my successor, Manjool Shah, MD. Dr. Shah is a world-class complex cataract surgeon who has expertise in many aspects of anterior segment surgery, including MIGS and traditional glaucoma surgery. Since beginning his career, he has been at the forefront of glaucoma surgical innovation and is also a fantastic educator. He has moderated the Surgical Complications video symposium at ASCRS Glaucoma Day for at least 5 years, and it is one of the most popular and entertaining moments of the ASCRS Annual Meeting, in my opinion. Dr. Shah is finishing his time at the University of Michigan and will be joining the faculty of New York University this spring. Those of us practicing in New York welcome his arrival.

Please enjoy this special issue of EyeWorld and join me in welcoming Dr. Shah as our new Glaucoma Editor. If you would like to come say hi to me, I am thrilled to be co-directing ASCRS Glaucoma Day with Leon Herndon, MD, in San Diego, California, this spring.
