ASCRS Annual Meeting canceled amid pandemic

The ASCRS Annual Meeting, originally scheduled for May 15–19 in Boston, Massachusetts, was canceled for these dates amid the ongoing pandemic involving the novel coronavirus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).
This decision came after strong and serious review of the frequently updated and changing recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the City of Boston. ASCRS leadership, with these recommendations, determined that canceling this spring meeting was in the best interest of members, industry supporters, and public safety.
“ASCRS has worked closely with the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center to navigate this very challenging and dynamic situation,” ASCRS stated in a message about the meeting to its members. “During this entire process there has never been an option that was an ideal solution, but we ultimately feel this is the correct decision and in the best interest of our members.”
ASCRS is exploring options to expand its suite of digital offerings to provide members tools to maintain and expand their clinical knowledge, while offering an engaging and fulfilling user experience. In the meantime, it is working on reconciling registration fees and hotel cancellations; no action at this time is needed on the part of current registrants. Registrants have several options for how to handle their registration fees. More information is available at annualmeeting.ascrs.org.
As the world strives to better understand the far-reaching, long-term implications of this situation, ASCRS remains committed to its mission. In doing so, it continues to provide resources and essential support to its members that could be helpful, even during a time of “social distancing.”
ASCRS currently hosts a wealth of clinical education and tools on its recently revamped website. With surgical videos, presentations, webinars, CME activities, podcasts and more, ascrs.org/clinical-education is a source for ongoing education on topics pertaining to cornea, cataract, refractive, glaucoma, practice management, and others. In addition, content from the 2019 ASCRS Annual Meeting is now available for all ASCRS members. The EyeConnect listserv is a place where ophthalmologists from all over the world can connect, ask questions, and share advice and opinions.
The Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery remains a distinguished source for peer-reviewed scientific content, and EyeWorld, the magazine of ASCRS provides society news, highlights recent research of interest to anterior segment surgeons, and shares perspectives and pearls from expert surgeons and clinician scientists.
ASCRS also has a strategic partnership with ASOA, the preeminent society for ophthalmic practice managers and administrators. ASCRS and ophthalmologists know how important it is that administrators have the resources they need to help them at this unprecedented time.
As the medical field navigates this uncharted territory, ASCRS remains “For surgeons. For you.”
