Ophthalmic industry donates to Haiti

Several ophthalmic pharmacutic businesses quickly responded to the earthquake that devastated Haiti last month by providing more than $21 million in funds and pharmaceuticals.
As of late January, several businesses from all over the world including Abbott (Abbott Park, Ill.), Amgen (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), Bayer (Leverkusen, Germany), GlaxoSmithKline (London), Medtronic (Minneapolis), Novartis (Basel, Switzerland), Purdue Pharma (Stamford, Conn.), Sanofi-Aventis (Paris) and Teva Pharmaceuticals (Petah Tikva, Israel) announced they would be donating medications and/or money to the Haitian relief effort.
All told, the donations total about $21.151 million with some of those businesses also announcing they will match employee donations dollar-for-dollar, which should cause that estimated total to continue to increase.
