The ASCRS Opening General Session, 10:00 am, includes presidential speeches, the Binkhorst Lecture, Looking Back, Looking Ahead”, by I. Howard Fine, M.D. Dr. Fine reviews the origins of cataract surgery and how it became the miracle of 20th Century Medicine. He doesn’t stop with the here and now. Will femtosecond lasers supplant phaco? Will lenticular refractive surgery supplant laser-based corneal vision correction? And, how can ophthalmology conquer World-blindness to become the miracle of 21st Century Medicine? Inductees to the ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame will be introduced.
Symposium-Ocular Trauma
Captain David Tanzer, MC, USN will moderate a panel from the U.S. military and civilian academic institutions located in Miami, Atlanta and Philadelphia, in a joint session on ocular trauma. They’ll discuss current techniques and thought processes related to ocular injuries from battlefield and inner city perspectives. The attendees will come away with updated tips and practical pearls on how to care for ruptured globes and corneal lacerations, adnexal injuries, chemical injuries and burns, posterior aspects of ocular trauma and techniques for delayed visual rehabilitation. 1:00-2:30 pm
Retina Disorders and the Anterior Segment Surgeon, jointly sponsored by the ASCRS Retina and Cataract Clinical Committees, this session’s discussions will include Macular Structure and Premium IOLs, Macular Edema and Diabetic Retinopathy, Cataracts and AMD, Management of the Broken Capsule, and more. 3:00-5:00 pm.
