promises to entertain and educate this year

Continuing in their Tuesday timeslot, immediately following the Challenge Cup, this year’s 28th annual ASCRS Film Festival promises to be fun, educational, and outrageous all at once.
William J. Fishkind, M.D., Tucson, Ariz., is chair of the Film Festival judges’ panel, and promises, “Always enjoyable, this Festival fulfils one central function of ASCRS—education. Illustrious concepts have their launch in the film festival, and your commitment makes that occur!”
The new producer category-bringing the total number of categories to 10- was created to help reach younger contestants and those who have never won before, Dr. Fishkind said. “This year, the categories will remain the same, with a continuation of the new producers category, in an effort to get more producers.
This year’s festival will feature “out-takes,” clips that would not usually be included with the films themselves but show something funny or interesting to the audience. “We will also continue have awards for “outrageous out-takes.” Those crazy video segments that just leave us incredulous or hysterically laughing! This truly made the Award Show funnier last year, and more ophthalmology-orientated. Ribbons will be awarded to the producers of those out-takes which are screened,” Dr. Fishkind added.
Film Festival judging will take place by the team of nine judges all day Wednesday, Thursday, and half a day on Friday. The panel is made up of renowned doctors from across the U.S.: Larry Patterson, M.D., Crossville, Tenn. as Chief Judge; Warren E. Hill, M.D., Mesa, Arizona; Thomas John, M.D., Tinley Park, Ill., Jack A. Singer, M.D., Randolph, Vermont; Spencer P. Thornton, M.D., Nashville, Tenn.; John A. Vukich, M.D., Madison, Wis., Liliana Werner, M.D., Ph.D., Salt Lake City, Utah; and Ehud I. Assia, M.D., Tel-Aviv, Israel, as the International Guest Judge.
Over 180 entries from around the world will be viewed and discussed. Winners will be announced in the categories of Cataract Complications, Cataract/Implant Surgery, Glaucoma Surgery, In-house Productions, Instruments and Devices/IOLs, New Producer, New Techniques, Quality Teaching, Refractive/Cornea surgery, and Special Interest. In each of the categories, the Judges will choose a runner-up and winner. One overall Grand prize will be awarded—for a total of 21 awards, and clips from winning films are shown during the festival.
“I hope many of our colleagues take pleasure in the experience and the opportunity to participate in an extraordinarily fascinating undertaking that is inevitably amusing, interesting and enlightening for the producers, the Judges, and most important, the audience!” , William J. Fishkind, M.D.
Films may be viewed, on demand, in the computer kiosks throughout the BCEC.
Film Festival Awards Ceremony will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the BCEC on April 13, Tuesday Morning at 11:00 a.m. following the Challenge Cup.
